ABOUT TAO

TheatreArts&Opportunities About.jpg

Theatre Arts & Opportunities is founded in the knowledge that the arts have the power to change lives. Our mission is to support and promote acting and playwrighting programs within Connecticut D.O.C. facilities as well as theater programs and performance opportunities for at risk youth and those re-entering communities following a period of incarceration.

Creating theatre programs within DOC facilities introduces participants to a setting in which they learn to express themselves through the discipline of writing and performing while developing the skills of collaboration, cooperation and self-expression.

Work written inside the prison is produced in local theaters. These performances are staged by the Inside Out Youth Theatre Program and All Rise Performances. These companies incorporate the plays, developed in the Actors and Playwrights’ programs, into their performances, along with their own material. This is an effective way to raise awareness of the talent, creativity, experience and dedication of program members.

Our hope is that, by showcasing this work, the public will hear the very human voices that are otherwise silent. In this way, the prisoner joins the chorus of humanity.

A theatre company is home to its members. Opportunity to grow within the safe space of creativity and friendship benefits and enhances the experience of children, the incarcerated and those returning home.

When one rises, we all rise.

“WE ALL MUST DO THEATRE, TO FIND OUT WHO WE ARE AND WHO WE CAN BECOME.”

- Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed, Brazil
